St. Elijah Frula Folklore Group

  • St. Elijah Folklore Dance Group~Frula of Merrillville, Indiana, is a cultural organization deeply rooted in the Serbian Orthodox community. It is associated with the St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Church, which serves as a cultural and spiritual hub for Serbian Americans in the region. The dance group plays a significant role in preserving and promoting Serbian heritage, particularly through the traditional music and dance of the Serbian people.

  • The St. Elijah Folklore Dance Group ~ Frula is a regular feature at local cultural events and Serbian Orthodox celebrations. We perform at our annual St. Elijah Slava celebration and St. Sava Celebration, church events, and regional Serbian folklore festivals. Our group has also participated in larger cultural events outside of Merrillville, representing Serbian culture in broader American society.

Our performances involve dancers dressed in traditional Serbian costumes (nosnja), which are often handmade and feature intricate embroidery and designs unique to different regions of Serbia and regions where Serbian people live. The music accompanying these dances is played similar to the traditional Serbian instruments.

  • Our St. Elijah Folklore Dance Group ~ Frula continues to thrive, with new members joining regularly. Our group remains committed to its mission of preserving Serbian culture through dance and music. We hold regular practices at the St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Sunday School, and actively recruit young people from the community to join and learn about our heritage and culture.
